Nairobi Restaurant Week - Moniko's Restaurant

NAIROBI RESTAURANT WEEK 2014

Kui Kihagi

If you doubted that Nairobi is becoming an increasingly cosmopolitan city, the premier Restaurant Week proves otherwise. Already a fixture on the restaurant scene in major cities like London, New York, and Cape Town, Nairobi’s very own Restaurant Week kicked off on January 30th. In sync with Kenya’s Golden Jubilee year, more than 50 restaurants around the city each came up with different prix fix menus priced at either Ksh. 1250 or Ksh. 1750.  Nairobi Restaurant Week (NRW 2014) has proved so successful that it has been extended to the 12th of February, with 20 restaurants participating. Not ones to sleep on such a brilliant opportunity, my friends and I decided to try out two restaurants during NRW 2014.

Moniko’s Restaurant, Valley Arcade

An increasingly popular restaurant, Moniko’s has a no-fuss-no-frills atmosphere with what I can only describe as kick-ass food. The garden restaurant, with its stark white outdoor furniture and water fountain, is the perfect setting for a great meal or cold drink with friends. It’s exactly the kind of place where one whiles an afternoon and evening away. With the sun still setting quite late, it was still light outside so my friend and I decided to sit in the garden restaurant and “get our grub on!”

To our great surprise, Moniko’s actually had a FOUR course menu! For Ksh. 1250, that is a total bargain. To maximize our experience, we both decided to order different items off the menu so we could compare the different items. This, of course, is only wise to do if you don’t mind someone eating off of your plate. We both had the pineapple and mint juice which was delicious. It had just the right amount of mint to give it a refreshing kick. I have previously had disastrous experiences with pineapple and mint juices at other restaurants so I was quite pleased that my gamble paid off. With only two choices of soup, I had the salmon and asparagus cappuccino while my friend had the watercress and lemon soup. I quite preferred the salmon and asparagus soup as I found the watercress and lemon soup too tangy for my liking.

I love cheese so when it came to selecting a starter, it was a no-brainer to order the goat cheese which was served on a bed of beetroot and rocket salad, and drizzled with a raspberry and balsamic reduction. YUM!! The soft texture of the goat cheese and crunch of the rocket made for a wonderful combination of textures, and the peppery taste of the rocket was a lovely complement to the sweetness of the beetroot and raspberry reduction. My friend had the seafood and spinach roulade which was accompanied with mustard seed sauce. Though his starter was on the smaller side, it was flavorful.

The service, courtesy of our waiter Saro, was efficient and we didn’t have to wait more than 5 minutes for each new course to be delivered. After soup and a starter, I was already quite stuffed by the time our main courses were delivered. My friend had the grilled fillet of Laikipa beef which came with porcini mushrooms, crispy onions, croquette potatoes and grilled veggies. Though the beef was a tad too salty, the potatoes and grilled veggies were perfectly done. I ordered the duck (later substituted with chicken), which was braised in a creamy tree tomato, lemongrass and star aniseed sauce, and accompanied with vegetable rice. My dish was pleasant enough but nothing to write home about (although obviously it made it on this blog).

For dessert we had a delicious Kenya tea parfait topped with a berry coulis.

Needless to say, we were stuffed at the end of dinner. I had a large cappuccino to top it all off (something I regretted at 3 a.m when I couldn’t fall asleep), while my friend kept going with the pineapple and mint juice. The great thing about Moniko’s is that even without the super competitive NRW price, the usual menu is affordably priced and it’ll remain a go-to favorite for drinks and/or a meal even after the NRW fuss has come and gone.

SECRET GARDEN

Hello people, I am back after a long time to share my experiences in the eating world. I guess I have lost enough weight to allow me to eat out again...hehehe!! Onto the first restaurant I visited recently.

Secret Garden is a restaurant located in 14 Riverside Drive, Nairobi. I had heard a lot about this restaurant from friends, so when I got the opportunity to go...I decided why not!

I guess it is called Secret Garden because it seems tucked away in this office park. It has indoor and outdoor seating. We opted for outdoor. It was quite busy and only one table was available. Lots of people seemed to be having their lunch meetings.

We got down to business right away. I ordered the sweet pork chops, please note that the waiter confirmed my order before going to the kitchen. My friend ordered the chicken. Once again our very friendly waiter read the order back to us.

Food was on our tables in 15 minutes. I looked at my food, very aesthetically put on my plate. However, I wondered since when pork looked like this; but I was hungry so I kept my mouth shut.

The lamb chops

Tasting my "pork", it tasted just like nyama choma. I thought perhaps my senses had gone kaput. So I forced my friend to taste it. After almost eating half my plate, he agreed with me that it was not pork at all, and there was nothing sweet about it. I called a different waiter who told me that I had been served lamb chops. He called the waiter who served us. Our dear waiter was baffled as to what I was complaining about as he was sure I had ordered the lamb chops. This mind you is the same waiter who read back my order to me to confirm he had written down the right thing. I asked him to check his notepad and hey presto!!!I had indeed ordered the pork.

So we had to wait 15 more minutes for the right order. Yes, I wanted what I wanted. If not that I was in good company, I am sure the diva in me would have come out!
So finally pork arrived. It was delicious. I really hadn't liked the lamb chops earlier, I felt they needed to be marinated more to give them flavor. The pork though was amazing. It was well cooked, tender, sweet but not too much.

Finally!!amazing pork.

We were too stuffed to have dessert though, so maybe next time.

Portugal!!

I was in Lisbon recently and to be honest I am not much of a sightseer but my colleagues managed to drag me out. Went to a place called Castelo de S. Jorge. Gives you a good view of the city below.

After a good stroll round the castle, we went to a restaurant called Ja Disse at Bairro Alto. My colleagues were determined to have the sardines which apparently is really popular in Lisboa. I opted for the pork and beef...yes, yes....not very adventurous of me...but hey!!aren't the Portuguese known for their good meat?? I think the sardines were really good though, seeing as one of my colleagues had two orders.

Some bread pudding kind of thing with shrimp!!lol!!don't rem the name but it tasted better than it looks:-)

Villa Beach Restaurant

Villa Beach Restaurant is one of the Jumeirah Beach Hotel restaurants. Fantastic place to just have a casual lunch and enjoy the awesome views of the Burj Al Arab and the beachfront. Word of advise though...In this summer weather, please use the services of the buggy from the hotel to the restaurant. It is too hot and too far to walk.

When we got there we chose to seat indoors. I was definitely not brave enough to seat in 45degree weather...no matter how good the view is. We were shown to a table by the terrace doors...so all was not lost.

Our very attentive and friendly waiter gave us the menus. The food served is mostly Mediterranean but you can still have your steak and lamb chops if that's what you prefer. My date opted for the King prawn with French fries and I ordered the Angus beef tenderloin(medium done), with French fries and a bucks fizz while I waited for my meal.

Food was good, however, my steak was more medium rare than medium. Prawns were delicious..more queen than king though if I have to say so. We were too full to eat dessert and the conversation was so good that we lost track of time and they were already closing, so maybe next time I will give it a try.

Prices range from about AED 100 - 170 for the main course.

Would definitely try again. A romantic dinner this perhaps, where I can enjoy the outdoors and a meal on the beach.

While at the South Coast...check out this place by the beach. Nice chilled out place to have some sea food or whatever you fancy and take it down with a yummy cocktail.

Osteria - Karen, Nairobi

Osteria

Osteria in Karen is a place I had always wanted to give a try. Being a fan of the one located on Lenana road and having visited the village market one, when the invite came, I was in it. I have heard mixed reviews about it but wanted to know for myself.

Walking in to Osteria,I already felt good. Its one huge garden with seating by the pool. I think its simplicity is part of its appeal. It just feels laidback. I am sure this is popular with families. It makes you just feel like you're at home in your backyard.
The waiter approached us as we walked in. He greeted us like we had been there before. Very friendly guy. Showed us to our seats and left to get the menus.

As usual, it seems like I was the only one eating, as my lunch mate decided he was now full (eyes rolling). I ordered the fish and the house wine. Really, the wine list I was offered was only selling by the bottle. Seeing as I am trying to control my drink portions, I opted for wine by the glass. No name was given. I was just asked red or white....ofcourse I said Rose. He repeated red or white...I repeated Rose. Took me a minute to realize that wasn't going to happen...so white it was.

While we....I...waited for my meal ,they brought the bread. Its really yummy....I love it. However, portion is large so if you're alone or just two...be careful as it might fill you up too much, leaving no space for the actual meal.

My meal finally came. I had ordered the grilled red snapper with grilled vegetables. Once again, portions are huge, so go prepared. The fish was really good. Nice and moist. Cooked just perfect. The veggies however, there was just something I didn't like about them. Don't get me wrong, they didn't taste bad...just...I think they could have done better. They tasted more char grilled...emphasis on the char....than grilled.

It was a lot. So a doggie bag it was, to finish at home.
Osteria is a nice place to go and just relax with your friends. So I would recommend it for a nice Sunday afternoon with the family.

Rhapsody's - Lagos, Nigeria

If you ever plan to be in Lagos, this is one place to check out. Rhapsody is your trendy wine bar cum restaurant chill out place. It is in Ikeja City Mall. Once you get in, you get a sense of it being modern, sophisticated but simple and clean. All the seats are white leather  with wooden tables, very nice. There is a smoking and non smoking section inside (You can choose to also seat outside.), we opted to go inside as it is quite hot in Lagos and the air conditioned space seemed more welcome.

By the entrance is a display of wine and I already feel at home :-) . There is a bar in the middle for y'all drinkers, with a large selection of drinks...and tables on the side for the diners.

We are seated and the waitress....whose name is.....wait for it....Sexy!!for real!!!her name badge said Sexy....*eyes rolling!! Well Sexy gave us our menus and gave us some time to go through them. The interesting thing about the menu is that most of the food items were paired with a wine. If you're a wine lover this is fantastic as you get to taste and experience different wines and combinations of wines.
I ordered the seafood espetada, no wine:-( and my friend who decided he wasn't hungry ordered the deep fried calamari. So I see Sexy write my order and even nod that she has it and go the kitchen to deliver the order. What came to my table though was a chicken espetada. I ask Sexy if she confused my order and she says no that's what I ordered. She then opens the notepad and realizes that she has made a mistake. She then takes the time to try to convince me to stay with this order and not return the food. Mennnnnn!!she was lucky I did not have the time to wait for a new order...so reluctantly I agree.
So I was mad and even forgot to take a pic of the food. This is the point at which I remembered.
Sorry guys.....I didn't want the chicken..but clearly it was really good. It was flavorful, cooked just right and made you want to order another plate. Yum!!

I then noticed that there was a lady over on one of the other tables who had the same order as I did...so with as much zooming as I could do....this is it. The  presentation of the food is amazing. Makes your mouth water just looking at it.

So I would definitely give it a 8....food is good, ambience is good, staff are friendly...yes even though Sexy clearly didn't get my order right. The manager goes round speaking to the customers and ensuring they are fine, so it keeps the waiters on their toes. The only thing is..if you ever happen to visit...it is a bit on the pricey side..be well prepared.

20 weird and unusual restaurants

Came across this article online and thought i would share with you....very interesting the things people do. Got it from a website called www.oddstuffmagazine.com

Calico Cat Café
Calico Cat Café
Calico Cat Café
The first menu you’ll see at Calico Cat Café in Tokyo has nothing to do with food: it’s the cat selection. But you won’t be dining on any of these adorable felines – they’re just there to provide some companionship while you sip a cup of tea. The watchful staff ensures that guests treat the cats respectfully, and provide complimentary bags of dried cat food that can be used to attract your desired playmate. For many Tokyo residents, owning a cat isn’t realistic, so the city’s 30-odd cat cafés give them a chance to enjoy some “commitment-free cat stroking”.

Devil Island Prison Restaurant

Devil Island Prison Restaurant
The owner of the Devil Island restaurants in China reportedly wanted to scare people away from a life of crime by showing them just how rough prison life can be – through a jail-themed restaurant where you’re led to your table in handcuffs and served fried coffin-shaped bread. Each table is surrounded by rusting prison bars, and you’re served by waiters in black-and-white striped uniforms. A similar restaurant in Beijing is misleadingly named ‘Zen Cool’.
